DIGILITY 2018: from insider conference to hightech trade fair

Conference & expo convinces with new formats

DIGILITY has also continued to develop positively with its third edition. It convinced all participants with an outstanding program on three stages and an even broader range of offerings on the exhibitor side, thanks to the addition of new themes like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. International experts provided insights into their research findings and best practice examples, as well as ideas for innovative business models. One area of focus this year: the use of immersive technologies in employee training. DIGILITY 2018 here demonstrated clear progress: the savings and optimization potential is becoming ever more apparent for companies. More providers are providing support or are capable of reacting individually to the needs of companies and of programming corresponding solutions. Of central importance for this development is the exchange of ideas with developers, who were this year offered their own stage program for the first time. VR/AR applications for rehabilitation and preventive health care are gaining in substance and were made tangible for visitors at the stands of the DIGILITY exhibitors through demos and prototypes of the applications and products.

"With DIGILITY we are continuing to move within a young market environment with great potential. We are thus assuming the complex role of both conveying the state of the art of greatly differing technologies, while at the same time discussing current application examples," is how Katharina C. Hamma, Chief Operating Office of Koelnmesse GmbH, describes the special challenge facing DIGILITY. "We wish to both open up new perspectives for industry and medium-sized companies that are considering the topic for the first time, and to at the same time offer a home to those who have already looked into the subject in greater depth. This year we were once again extremely successful in doing so with the combination of conference and expo."

From the perspective of developers

The highlights include the opening keynote of Thomas Reiter (Coordinator and Advisor to the Director General, European Space Agency) on 27 September. The former astronaut will give a lecture on Alexander Gerst's mission on the ISS, and demonstrate how experiments in space can provide useful findings for life on Earth. The lecturers also include Alison Lowndes (NVIDIA), Eric Ma (Massachusetts Institute of Technology / Novartis), Dr. Matthew Liao (New York University), Tobias Nientiedt (OTTO Group), Hervé Fontaine (HTC VIVE), Stefan Heininger (Telekom Deutschland), Caroline Sinders (Convocation Design + Research), Jana Clement (T-Systems), and Dr. Diego Gonzalez-Zuniga (Samsung).

From the perspective of developers

In keeping with the motto of “Collaboratively Hack xR Challenges,” three teams formulated solutions as to how xR technologies might support collaboration within companies in future within a period of 32 hours in the context of the DIGILITY Hackathon. The TriTrie Games & Friends team won first prize with the idea of using the voice control system "Cortana" to configure an automobile with voice commands in a VR application. "Creative results once again literally originated "overnight" in 2018 at the DIGILITY Hackathon, on the basis of which we can have a look into the future of xR. What the participants managed to do in such a short time is astonishing. We can take a great deal of inspiration with us for our daily work", Jens Angerer from the Audi Production Lab of AUDI AG, the main sponsor of the Hackathon, was pleased to announce. The xR specialist then discussed the current status of xR in Germany in his lecture and suggested closer networking in future, in order to keep up internationally.

A two-day conference for developers also took place for the first time in the context of DIGILITY. It provided them with space and time to exchange ideas and discuss the themes in more depth. Presented were themes like “The challenge to design powerful VR applications,” “Solutions for large CAD data automatic preparation & optimization,” “Spatial Sound –  Immersive3D Audio Developing,“ “xR applications with Unity technology,” and “Applying AI to AR/VR.” Developers are at the hub of all technologies presented at DIGILITY. Very little happens without them.

The use of artificial intelligence was an aspect of many lectures on all stages and in various contexts: ethical and moral aspects were discussed in the process as much as concrete use cases in everyday routine and in industry. This segment should play an even greater role at DIGILITY, considering that there has to date been no trade fair format in Germany for the theme. DIGILITY is the ideal transmitter between technology supply and the demand for tangible application scenarios on the market. Around 1,400 participants let themselves be convinced of this in 2018 on location in an area of 5,000 square meters.

The next DIGILITY takes place on May 8-9, 2019. We are looking forward to then experiencing the next stage of development of DIGILITY.
